Abstract

The muscle relaxing effects of glycerine ethers, such as meprobamate, were discovered in 1946. Three years later the relaxing effects on the psyche were investigated and in 1952 Frankl descriptionbed good results in the treatment. Of anxiety and depression. These drugs came to be called tranquillisers from the Latin tranquillitas, which means calmness as applied to sea or air. A more suitable term would have been ataractic from the Greekataraktos (undisturbed). a word used by the Stoics to descriptionbe a state of emotional equilibrium, which they aspired to achieve through a healthy way of life and philosophical meditation. 1 Major tranquillisers have antipsychotic as well as anxiolytic and muscle relaxing properties, whereas minor tranquillisers have no antipsychotic action.
