Abstract

A superior standard of medical care and health education has been available to the employees of ""Triangle Sugar Estates in South Eastern Zimbabwe for 20 years. This has included pre-employment screening and on-going medical surveillance (and exit physical exams. in selected workers). Lately hearing testing and compulsory ear protection for noise levels above 90 decibels has been added to the program. For several years the Chief Medical Officer has been concerned about the dusty environment created in processing sugar cane and raw cotton. This dusty environment has the potential to produce acute and chronic respiratory impairment. i.e. baggassosis or byssinosis.
