Abstract

The diagnostic potential of the measurement of' antibodies to double-strandeddeoxyribonucleic acid, in SLE, was assessed for the first time, in a Nigerian dermatology clinic. During the two-year period of study it was found that this test distinguished SLE patients from those with a closely related disease, DLE. Although a few patients suffering from onchodermatitis and some allergic conditions showed high levels of the DNA antibodies in their sera, these diseases were easily distinguished from SLE. by other tests. This work was supported by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Lagos, Nigeria. The technical assistance of Messrs. B. Sogbanmu, Emmanuel Osho, Samuel Umobong and Mrs. A. Dele-Kareem is gratefully acknowledged.
