Abstract

There was an outbreak of S. Heidelberg enteritis in the Neonatal Unit of Harare Central Hospital from July to December 1983. One hundred and eighteen babies were affected. The overall case fatality was 18%. However none of the babies who were asymptomatic or had diarrhoea alone died. Antimicrobial therapy does not appear to be indicated in neonates infected with S. Heidelberg who present with diarrhoea only or who are completely asymptomatic. Strict enforcement of hygienic techniques, isolation of infected babies together with their contacts as well as early discharge of these babies were thought to have been helpful in controlling the outbreak.
