Abstract

Although in many parts of the developed world, infection with Treponema pallidum is becoming increasingly rare, syphilis continues to be an important infectious disease in Zimbabwe. The diagnosis of syphilis may however present problems, and an understanding of the serological response to infection is vital, since in few other conditions are serological tests as critical for diagnosis, the opportunity for misdiagnosis so great and the potential consequences to the patient so drastic. The purpose of this article is to descriptionbe the range of serological tests available to assist with the diagnosis of syphilis, and to indicate the significance of their results in different clinical situations.
