Abstract

In a tuberculin survey in Buhera district 1740 primary school children without previous BCG vaccination were Mantoux-tested. The prevalence of tuberculous infection was 5,57%; the mean age was 7,27 years. The ""average"" annual risk of tuberculous infection over the last 7,27 years was 0,8%. This would correspond with an incidence of smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis of 40 -48/100.000 per year. The BCG coverage in this age group was 13,7%. In the BCG vaccinated group 56,2% had a Mantoux-result of 0mm.
