Abstract

A microphotometer was employed to quantitate skin blanching caused by topical corticosteroids. The technique was entirely objective and eliminated any operator bias. It was found to give similar results to those obtained using classic subjective vasoconstrictor assay and ranked five proprietary corticosteroid creams in order of their clinical potency. Due to the time taken in obtaining results this method is only suitable for small sample sizes.
