Abstract

Results of a survey of health service use of 175 mothers of babies with neonatal tetanus in 1978-79 are presented, together with observations of the health services, One hundred of the mothers had attended antenatal clinics, but few had been vaccinated in the clinics, The survey covered the period of a mass vaccination campaign which included immunization of women between 15 and 45 years of age with one dose of tetanus vaccine. The protective efficacy of this vaccine was estimated to be 73%. Since the survey, immunization coverage has improved with the .implementation of the Expanded Programme on Immunization, and this has coincided with a fall in the hospital incidence of neonatal tetanus. Twelve mothers had delivered in a health facility, and 91 had attended soon after delivery for prophylactic treatment.
