Abstract

Viral hepatitis is a systemic disease mainly involving the liver. Several cases of acute viral hepatitis seen in patients are caused by either hepatitis A Virus (HAV), hepatitis B Virus (HBV) or hepatitis C Virus (HCV). All of these agents produce characteristic but indistinguishable histopathological lesions in the liver. Their clinical picture varies in their presentation from inapparent or subclinical infection, slight malaise and the anicteric form of the disease, to acute icteric illness; severe prolonged jaundice and chronic liver disease The present study was undertaken to measure the prevalence in the general healthy population of Zimibabwe, with one specific objective, thus to determine the proportion carriers from the healthy population.
