Abstract

Four hundred and six children aged between one month and three years were admitted to Marondera Hospital during 1982 and 1983 with pneumonia. Of these 68,7% of the children were under eighteen months of age. Forty-two per cent of the children were of normal weight under eighteen months of age. The overall mortality rate was 10,3%. The highest mortality, 38,5% occurred in underweight children in the first six months of life. (Weight below 80% of the 50th centile). There was no seasonal variation.
