There were ten deaths (a maternal mortality rate of 2/1 000) Haemorrhage and eclampsia were the commonest causes of death. In six cases an avoidable factor seems to have been involved. Maternal mortality was significantly more frequent after caesarean section and among twin pregnancies. Serious maternal morbidity consisted of uterine rupture in 2,2/1 000 and eclampsia in 1,6/1 000 of cases.
