Abstract

In hyperprolactinaemic patients the most useful diagnostic criteria are the basal serum prolactin levels and the results of radiological investigations of the sella. Their subsequent management remains unsatisfactory. Transphenoidal surgery provides good results with microadenomas but the cure rate falls with increasing tumour size. Bromoergocriptine has been shown to reduce tumour size in both micro and macroadenomas but treatment may need to be continued indefinitely.
