Abstract

Forty Nigerians treated with the theco-peritoneal shunt operation in Lagos University Teaching Hospital between 1977 and 1979 are descriptionbed. The chief disadvantage is that it is not valve-regulated and may cause minimal changes in the haemodynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation. Its advantages include extremely low cost and freedom from the complications inherent in other shunt operations. In countries where cost and availability of complete valve assemblies are major problems, theco-peritoneal shunting is a good substitute and its use is recommended.
