Abstract

This paper descriptionbes the characteristics of 60 indigenous Zimbabwean women with premature menopause. The mean age of menopause was 29,2 years and 91 percent of the patients were between the ages of 21 to 35 years. Besides previously descriptionbed causes of premature menopause such as genetic abnormalities, auto-immune diseases, damage of ovaries from cytotoxic drugs and surgical removal of ovaries, premature menopause was also found in patients who had used African medicine (muti) for infertility and Depo Provera for contraception.
