Abstract

Urethral mucosal prolapse in young females is an uncommon and ill-understood pathological entity. Two cases are reported in children aged four and six years. The appearance of the prolapsus is typically that of a purple oedematous ring of tissue about the external urinary meatus. Aetiology is discussed. In most cases no predisposing condition is found. Symptomatology is minimal, blood staining of the vulva being the usual presentation. A differential diagnosis is presented. Surgical excision of the prolapsus is the recommended treatment. Healing at the external meatus occurs rapidly thereafter.
