Abstract

Aggressive surgical management of full-thickness oesophageal burns reduces the morbidity and mortality associated with this potentially lethal condition. This regime is the only method of making a firm diagnosis, and hence, instituting adequate treatment for full-thickness oesophago-gastric necrosis which could occur in any patient after ingestion of caustic material. A case of severe full-thickness oesophageal burns in a 23 year-old man successfully treated by early oesophagoscopy, oesophagectomy, oesophagostomy. feeding gastrostomy, followed by isoperistaltic right colon bypass is reported.
