Abstract

Nuclear war is the greatest public threat facing mankind today. This issue affects the Third World in several ways: 1) The diversion of money from development to military uses; 2) The involvement of Third World states as proxies in the Cold War; 3) The increasing likelihood of Third World states becoming nuclear powers or targets; 4) The serious effects on Third World countries following a nuclear war. The long-term probability of a nuclear war is high unless existing risk factors are actively reduced. Doctors have an important role to play in the prevention of nuclear war.
