Abstract

Perinatal data at Gweru General Hospital were retrospectively reviewed over a two-year period. The perinatal mortality rate was 71,8/1 000 but this rate was three times higher among the unbooked compared to the booked cases. About two-thirds of these perinatal deaths occurred before birth and were due mainly to twin pregnancy, breech delivery, malformations and dystocia. The neonatal mortality rate was 28,6/1 000 and the most important causes of deaths were low birthweight and perinatal asphyxia.
