Abstract

Platelet counts performed on 150 (90 males and 60 females) normal Zimbabweans aged 16-35 years with a mean age sd of 21,4 3,0 years revealed a mean sd platelet count of 233 83 x 10 9/1 with 95 per cent confidence limits of 220-246 x 10 9/1. Platelet counts for females (mean sd of 261 91 x 10 9/1; 95 per cent reference interval 238-284) were significantly higher than those for males (214 73 x 10 9/1; 95 per cent reference interval 199-229; p < 0,005). These results further confrrm the low platelet counts previously documented in indigenous healthy Africans and people of African descent. The cause of this peculiarity is not known. Further studies are required to elucidate the factors that may be responsible for such a distinct yet unexplained phenomenon.
