Abstract

A total of 159 clinical specimens obtained from patients with a variety of clinical infections including wound infections, boils, bacteraemia, chronic suppurative otitis media and chronic osteomyelitis were investigated for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. Of these, 83 yielded S. aureus and 42 of them were resistant to methicillin (MRSA) - representing an isolation rate of 50,6 per cent. Thirty-five of the 42 MRSA were sensitive to four or five antibiotics. Six MRSA strains were resistant to gentamicin and clindamycin in addition to tetracycline, and one also to erythromycin and neomycin. Many of the MRSA strains belonged to phage group 111 and some of the remaining strains were untypable. Although the seven multiple-resistant MRSA strains satisfied strains of MRSA, there was no demonstrable evidence of easy spread among the isolated strains. The clinical significance of these isolates is discussed
