Abstract

Tropical pancreatic diabetes (TPD) is rare in the Copperbelt region of Zambia, possibly because the staple diet is maize meal rather than cassava. In a study of 600 African patients with diabetes mellitus 52 developed diabetes before 20 years of age and of these only 1 patient had TPD. In this subgroup calcification of the pancreas sought by plain abdominal radiography was found only in this patient. No cases of youth onset ketosis-resistant diabetes were found.
