Abstract

The activities of 12 antimicrobial agents against 20 strains of Campylobacter jejune and 19 strains of Yersinia enterocolitica were studied by an agar dilution method. Both genera were uniformly sensitive to gentamicin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol. Whereas the C. jejuni strains showed good susceptibility to ampicillin, the Y. enterocolitica strains were resistant to this antimicrobial agent. Carbenicillin and cefuroxime had poor in vitro activities against both organisms. Although therapy with antimicrobial agents may be of limited value in mild cases of diarrhoea, we suggest the use of gentamicin, tetracycline or chloramphenicol in severe cases of enterocolitis with systemic complications which may be associated with these organisms.
