Abstract

The case files of four hundred and twenty-five patients admitted to the Parirenyatwa Hospital with a diagnosis of hypertension, over a three-year period, were studied retrospectively. Fifty of these patients (12%) had severe hypertension. Forty-six were blacks, and in these the prevalence of target organ damage was found in the following descending order of frequency - renal 39 per cent, cardiovascular 28 percent, retinal 22 per cent and central nervous 9 per cent.
