Abstract

There is a dearth of literature on sequential platelet and other haemostatic Changes in trypanosomiasis due to Trypanosoma gambienese infection. We hereby report haemostatic changes observed when adult rabbits were chronically infected with T. gambiense to simulate possible comparative lesions in the parasites natural host, man. Platelet counts gradually decreased, dropping to 44.4 percent below pre-infection levels on day 21 post-infection and then increased to low normal levels on day 42 p.i. (post-infection). Other haemostatic changes recorded included prolonged Prothrombin time (PT) and Activated Partial Thromboplastin time (APTr) as well as initially elevated and later reduced levels of plasma fibrinogen concentration. These data confirm that gambiense trypanosomiasis interferes with haemostasis.
