Abstract

Three-hundred healthy adult male Batswanas between the ages of 20 and 60, forming a representative cross-section of the workforce, were chosen from those attending for annual medical examination. Spirometry was performed on all subjects and linear regression equations for lungfunction measurements as a function of age and height computed. The study population included non-smokers, healthy smokers and smelter workers (who are exposed to Sulpher Dioxide in the work environment). The observed lung volumes were similar to those found in other studies in blacks (Table I). The regression equations for the various spirometric measurements are given on the opposite page, together with confidence intervals (CI) formean values at 95 per cent and values for R.
