Abstract

Antisera were produced against campylobacter strains 'LA4', 'LA2', 'LA36', 'LA53', 'LA78' and 'LA1214' isolated and indentified in Lagos, Nigeria. A total of forty eight other campylobacter strains were screened using the six antisera produced to determine their serotypability. Two (4.16 percent) of the strains reacted, positively with antiserum raised against strain LA4; eighteen (37.5 percent) with antiserum raised against strain LA36; three (6.25 percent) reacted with the antiserum raised against strain LA78 while eleven (22.92 percent) thirteen (27.08 percent) and one (2.08 percent) were positive with antisera raised against strains 'LA53' , 'LA1214' and 'LA12' in that order. Antisera produced in the study compared favourably with commercial antisera. This represents the first successful attempt to produce antisera against campylobacter in this environment. Certainly, the present study will provide a base-line information for the mass production of antisera against campylobacter in Nigeria.
