Abstract

A total of 161 cases of organophosphate poisoning incidents were recorded over a period of 5 1/2 years at Parirenyatwa Hospital. 83 per cent (133) of the cases were parasuicides and 17 per cent (28) were accidental. In comparison of the 30 cases recorded (over 11 months) at a rural hospital, 30 percent (9) were attempted suicides and 70 per cent (21) were accidental cases. The results of the study also revealed that the 20 to 30 year age group is more prone to poisoning. Social problems compounded by marriage and urbanisation seem to play a significant role (factor) in all parasuicidal cases.
