Abstract

6867 primary school children aged 6 to 17 years were investigated in the Masvingo district for anthroprometric data in the years 1983/84. 15.8 per cent of the children at 7 years and 21.1 per cent of all children aged 7 - 17 years were below the 5th NCHS-percentile for the indicator "weight-for-age". 40.5 per cent of the 7 year olds and 44.4 per cent of the children aged 7 - 11 years ranged below 90 per cent of the median for the indicator "height-for-age". This points to a high prevalence of chronic malnutrition or stunting. However, only 0.5 per cent of the 7 year olds and 0.8 per cent of the children between 6 and 11 years of age were below 80 per cent of the median for the indicator "weight for height". This shows a low figure for acute malnutrition. There seems to be no need to start a nutritional intervention scheme for school children.
