Abstract

83 large bowel carcinomas were histologically diagnosed at Harare Histopathology Laboratory in 1985 and 1986. These tumours were equally divided between those in the rectum and the ones in the colon. 18 per cent of tumours were in persons under the age of 30 years and of these 70 per cent were females. All patients under the age of 30 years had a disease with at least Dukes B at diagnosis. More than 85 per cent of the tumours in patients under 30 years of age were of the signet ring type. There was no difference between patients above and below the age of 30 years as regards the presenting of symptoms. The majority of patients presented with abdominal pains and blood per rectum.
