oa Central African Journal of Medicine - Mortality in psychiatric populations: A review

Volume 34, Issue 9
  • ISSN : 0008-9176

Abstract

A review of the literature on mortality in psychiatric populations shows that there has been a decreasing trend in the mortality rates over the years, even though these rates continue to be higher than those of the general population. This observation applies to both natural and unnatural deaths. The need to encourage research efforts in developing countries along similar lines was emphasized. This will allow for comparison of casual factors, mortality patterns and changing trends over the years and preventive measures.
