Until the end of 1987, the geriatric service at Parirenyatwa Hospital was custodial in that after admission to the unit, little or no further diagnostic or therapeutic intervention was made. In 1988, this service was transformed to an appropriate, multi-disciplinary service intended to meet the needs of each patient individually. We review the effect of this change and we pose two questions. The first is, "is there a need for such services?', and the second is, "if yes, how are they implemented? " Then follows a descriptionption of the geriatric service in 1989, its first full year in existence. The intention is that readers make their own assessment of the merits of hospital based geriatrics in Zimbabwe.
