(1) The role of the dietary fat in regulating the serum�cholesterol level is now established. In this respect the quality of the dietary fat is more important than its quantity. (2) The evidence for a relationship between the serum�cholesterol level and the development of coronary heart disease is very strong, but it is not complete. (3) Nevertheless, under certain circumstances it may be justified to recommend cholesterol� reducing diets. Some practical aspects of such diets are discussed. (4) It is stressed that the dietary fat is only one of many factors which may be concerned in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease.
