Abstract

An assessment is made of the amount of damage caused by malaria to children in hyper- endemic areas. It probably kills about 5 per cent. of all children born. It causes enlargement of the liver, but there is no clear evidence that it causes fibrosis. The significance of the infant parasite rate is discussed. It is shown that the amount of parasitaemia in infants may underestimate the amount of transmission occurring in the community.
