oa Central African Journal of Medicine - The role of onchocerca volvulus in lymphadenopathy and associated conditions

Volume 6, Issue 7

These investigations suggest that in the district concerned- (a) onchocerciasis plays no part in the production of hydrocele or orchitis; ( b) onchocerciasis is etiologically associated with sclerosing hypertrophic lymphadenopathy of the inguino-crural glands and with a characteristic elephantiasis affecting principally and superficially the fundus of the scrotum; (c) these two pathological conditions associated with elephantiasis (like severe onchodermatitis, specific depigmentation and posterior segment lesions of the eyes) are virtually confined to heavily infected individuals living in hyperendemic areas and repeatedly exposed to Simulium bites.
