Abstract

Peritoneoscopy is an easy, safe and most helpful diagnostic procedure, but with definite limitations. It is like peeping into a room through the keyhole which gives a good but limited view, as opposed to laparotomy, where the door is thrown wide open and one can walk around and touch the furniture. Good biopsy specimens are, however, obtainable. It is especially useful in deciding the presence or absence of intraperitoneal injury, hepatic or peritoneal carcinoma or tuberculosis. It may be invaluable in establishing the diagnosis in cases of hepatomegaly, cirrhosis, jaundice and ascites and it may also be of great help in viewing the pelvic contents and establishing the presence and type of pathology.
