Abstract

This investigation into the incidence and problem of cardiovascular disease in the African as seen in Matabeleland was undertaken in order to determine how the pattern compared with that seen in other parts of Africa and in other races. The results have supported other observations that the pattern of disease differs widely in different areas and races on this continent. Future investigations here will be directed to the reasons for these differences, particularly with regard to the fascinating group of cardiomyopathies. It is only by intensive study of these problems in as many areas as possible, and under different environmental circumstances that we shall be able to make a worthwhile contribution to the problems of cardiovascular disease in Africa. Paper read at Bulawayo at Central African Radiological Congress in May, 1962.
