Abstract

The incidence of the sickle cell trait in a number of tribes in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland is reviewed and the results of a survey amongst four other tribes are presented. The clinical features of 13 cases of S.C.A. ill children are descriptionbed and these are compared and contrasted with those found in other parts of Africa and the United States of America. A symptomless boy of seven years, homozygous for the sickle cell gene was found during a family study and a healthy 30 year old man with what might be nonmicrothalassaemic thalassaemia was discovered in the same way.
