Abstract

At the outset I want to mention an incident that took place in 1900, some seven years before my return from Australia. Mr Mally, then Assistant Entomologist at Cape Town, found a consignment of nursery stock from Australia to be infested with pernicious scale and also the black peach aphid, two pests which at that time were not known in South Africa. Although in those days no import permit was required, the trees were subject to inspection.
