In March 1972 reports were received from firms connected with the motor car industry at Blackheath near Cape Town, that insects, which adhere to new cars parked for some weeks in open car parks, caused severe damage to the paint work. The paint is not only discoloured at the places where the insects became stuck, but also cracks and lifts, so that the metal beneath is exposed. At one assembly plant 180 new cars had to be resprayed for this reason.
