oa Journal of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa - Seasonal temperature effects on fecundity of Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae): differences between South Africa and Australia
Cactoblastis cactorum is a biological control agent that has been highly successful in the control of Opuntia stricta in eastern Australia and less successful in the control of O. ficus-indica in South Africa. Fecundity of C. cactorum is measured at various seasonal inside and outside temparatures. The temperatures were related to latitudinal differences in the distribution of C. cactorum in the two countries. The population dynamics of C. cactorum are considered in the light of these results.
