Abstract

In a paper that explores selected dimensions of the multi-faceted leadership provided by Julius Nyerere not only for his own party and people in Tanzania, but also by example and exhortation for other African leaders, a few contextually relevant issues should be touched on by way of introduction. Nyerere was and inasmuch as his leadership continues to be discussed and analysed, is no run-of-the-mill leader. He is one of the more discussed, better known (both in Africa and elsewhere) and widely respected of Africa's first generation of post-independence leaders. He died (of leukaemia) in 1999, but lives on in memory, literature and Tanzanian popular culture and is comparable to Nelson Mandela in moral stature.
