Abstract

This article evaluates the institutional leadership provided by the Organization of African Unity (OAD) between 1963 and 2002 in respect of successes and failures, and then makes a brief assessment as to how its successor institution, the African Union (AU), differs from the OAU. By institutional leadership is meant 'the process of influencing the activities of an organization in its efforts toward goal-setting and goal-achievement' (Mararike 1995, 91). Twenty goals are analysed and a scorecard drawn up.
