Abstract

Like other African countries which, won freedom in a liberation struggle, South Africa's electoral politics is dominated by the movement credited with winning liberation, in this case the African National Congress. But democracy has enjoyed some unexpected assets, which have ensured continued citizen enthusiasm for formal participation and have provided some check on the ANC.
