Abstract

The white smokes from the chimney of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel rose, and the bells of St Peter's Basilica rang shortly after 6 O'clock (Central European time) on Tuesday 19th April 2005 to announce to the city of Rome and the world that a new head of the Roman Catholic Church had been elected. White smokes from the Sistine Chapel have become a means of announcing the (s)election of a new pope and the significance that a new chapter is about to be opened in the history of the Catholic Church.
