Abstract

Bakassi, a swampy area located in the creeks of the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean, marks the maritime border between Cameroon and Nigeria. It is also a symbol of what unites and opposes these two countries. This patchy, marshy and swampy area is inhabited seasonally mostly by fishermen and women who are in large majority Nigerians. However, in 1994 the area became the symbol of territorial disputes between these two countries.
