Abstract

The recently published Commission for Africa report is packed with big ideas for supporting Africa on the road to prosperity through improved governance systems, peace and security, investing in people, economic growth and poverty reduction, fairer trade and providing more and better aid. Putting aside the disappointment of decades of broken promises and declarations concerning Africa, a wide array of people contributed to the report with a renewed optimism for change. The result is a lengthy and detailed report, reflecting the diversity of issues raised and outlining new ideas for tackling them. However, whilst the report is a feat in itself, it must be remembered that it is but a first step 'towards a prosperous Africa'. The promises made must now be put into action to ensure tangible benefits for the poor African child, her family, community and nation. Recognising the enormity of this task, this article seeks to chart the many challenges on the road ahead and suggests means for overcoming them.
