Abstract

This article is the third and final part of the three article series on community development in oil producing areas of Nigeria, the Niger Delta. In the first part of the article series published in this journal, I had discussed why community development is vital and critical in oil producing areas of Nigeria (1). In the second article, I discussed the inadequacies of current community development efforts of oil companies in the Niger Delta and proposed essential elements of a comprehensive remedial strategy (2). At the core of the thinking in both papers is the undeniable fact that indigenous populations of the Niger Delta regard oil companies as the "government" they know since oil exploratory activities directly or indirectly shape their lives.
