In its resolution 1715 of 9 October 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously recommended the appointment of the South Korean Foreign Minister, Mr Ban Ki-moon as the eighth Secretary-General of the world body for a five year term from 1 January, 2007. As is required by the UN Charter, this recommendation was made to the General Assembly to make the final, but symbolic, decision. Four days later, on 13 October, the latter appointed the South Korean with acclamation "to succeed Kofi Annan when he steps down on 31 December."
