Abstract

This anthropologist and historian of slavery in sub-Saharan Africa presents here a dense and particularly well documented book on a phenomenon which still plagues the continent - the last identified cases date from 2009 - but on which there seems to be no truly reliable data. His approach combines an analysis of the concept of slavery and the possibility of its abolition under the Koran, Hadiths and the Sharia, with five chapters of field studies offering an update on the situation in Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Mauritania and Sudan, meant to shed light on a wide variety of situations, cultures, doctrines and traditions within Islam.
