Abstract

A central question here is: what does this book, a compilation from the author's weekly column in the Nigerian daily newspaper - set out to accomplish?

Broadly speaking the author has set for himself two tasks:

a) He wanted to identify the key issues around which certain contestations take place, most of these generating crises for the state system. This task he encapsulates in the main title of the work: 'Nigeria and the crisis of the nation-state'. In other words, what are the issue areas that generate the crises for the nation state, what are the arguments around those issues, and how have those issues mutated over time?

b) The second task he sets for himself was: how do we form a national consensus, or what should be the agenda for a national consensus on those issues that generate crises for the nation-state? This is encapsulated in the sub-title of the book: 'Agenda for national consensus'.
